This collaboration between Free Breakfast and Khenti Renaissance was inspired by the legacy of the ancestor Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Among many other things, Garvey helped found the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) which at its peak boasted a membership of over a million people on multiple continents.
There aren't many individual people in history that have had such an amazing impact as Marcus Garvey. He's influenced thousands if not millions of people and his mark on history is indelible. We can credit him with a number of contributions - among them the red, black, and green standard of the Pan-African Flag.
The name of this piece is derived from the Black Star Line, a shipping line created by Garvey and the UNIA. The words in this design are ones to live by. Take them to heart; and take a couple of minutes to watch a short video created by the good people over at the Atlanta Black Star news outlet entitled, "5 Facts Every Black Person Should Know About Marcus Garvey"
